Two noteworthy first babies were born in Santa Clara County on Friday within the first 61 minutes of the New Year, each with a remarkably timed arrival. One infant boy may well be the first on record in 2010, born just 20 seconds after midnight. The other newborn's timing granted him a high-tech numerical distinction. With his downy light-brown hair and pinkish cheeks, Terri Rucker and Jim Wright's son joined the world at precisely 1:01 a.m. on 01/01/10. A smart set of binary numbers, noted his parents, both Santa Clara engineers. On Friday, the couple cooed over their fourth child born at Good Samaritan Hospital, while discussing the auspicious date's relevance to ASCII computer codes. The binary number system uses the symbols 0 and 1, representing either off (0) or on (1). The system is crucial to communication inside a computer and simplifies information processing. The binary system had less relevance for the baby's brother, Torin Wright, an articulate boy who happens to be the complementary age of 10. Torin's thoughts were more universal as he cuddled the 9-pound, 4-ounce newborn on his mother's hospital bed, the infant's tiny fist clutched around his forefinger. "The first day of the year," Torin said. "The creation of the earth is beginning, so every time he has his birthday, it will be beginning again. " Plans for their second son were unnamed as of early Friday night.
